5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile
December 9, 2021
At the end of every year, people around the world look back at what they accomplished in the last 365 days and ponder what they’d like to accomplish during the next trip around the sun. Resolutions are a popular way to set goals and determine what you want to have accomplished by the end of the next year. If you’re struggling to come up with New Year’s resolutions, read on for five ideas that will help you achieve a bright, healthy smile.
#1: Visit the Dentist
With all the unpredictability that life brings, visiting the dentist every six months isn’t always easy to remember. Even so, it’s one of the most important parts of keeping your mouth healthy. Make a point of doing this in the new year to prevent oral health issues and to keep your pearly whites looking their best.
#2: Brush and Floss Better
Do you brush twice per day? If not, New Year’s is a great time to start! Brush your teeth once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth and protect the enamel. Additionally, floss at least once per day, preferably after you eat your last meal. This will remove 40% of the plaque from your teeth and decrease your chances of developing oral health issues like cavities and gum disease.
#3: Conquer Dry Mouth
Dry mouth can lead to cavities, increased plaque levels, gum disease, and a range of other oral health issues. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep this from occurring. Additionally, visit your dentist and tell them about your issues with dry mouth. They will be able to determine if it’s being caused by an underlying oral health issue and can come up with a treatment plan if necessary.
#4: Cut Out Tobacco
Smoking cigarettes sharply increases your chances of developing gum disease and oral cancer. Cut this habit out of your life in the new year to maintain a healthier mouth. Look for online resources or ask for support from loved ones if you need help quitting.
#5: Brighten Your Smile
Ask your dentist about the services they offer to give you a brighter smile. Additionally, if you consume a lot of dark sodas, coffee, or other beverages that can stain your teeth, try to cut back. You can also drink these through a straw to limit the amount of contact they have with your teeth.
The new year is the perfect time to make your dream smile a reality, so what are you waiting for? Make a point of showing your pearly whites the love they deserve so you can make it to the end of the next 365 days will a beautiful, more confident smile!
